The Basic Principle

Microneedling uses a device — in our case a Dr Pen, a medical-grade dermapen — fitted with very fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the surface of the skin. These channels are extremely small: invisible to the eye, and superficial enough to be entirely within the skin's own capacity to heal.

The healing response is the point. When the skin detects these micro-injuries, it activates its natural repair process — producing collagen, increasing cell turnover, and sending nutrients to the treated area. The result, over several weeks, is skin that is measurably renewed: firmer, smoother, and more even in tone and texture.

This is not a trick or a workaround. It's working with the skin's biology rather than against it. The same principle underlies many of the most effective dermatological treatments — stimulating the body's own repair mechanisms to produce improvement that topical products alone cannot achieve.

"Microneedling doesn't apply a result. It triggers the skin's own capacity to produce one."

Does It Hurt?

This is the question we're asked most often. The answer is: for most people, it is noticeably more intense than a standard facial but entirely within the range of what's manageable. The sensation is often described as a mild prickling or warmth across the skin — present, but not distressing.

The level of sensation depends on the area being treated, the depth of treatment, and your individual pain threshold. Certain areas — closer to bony surfaces or near the hairline — tend to feel more than others. The forehead and around the nose are often more sensitive than the cheeks.

We always perform a thorough consultation before a microneedling session, and we will adjust both depth and pace based on your feedback during treatment. You are in control of the experience throughout. If at any point something doesn't feel right, say so.

What Microneedling Addresses

Microneedling is one of the more versatile skin treatments available. It produces measurable improvement for:

What Happens During the Session

The session begins with a thorough cleanse and a brief consultation to confirm your skin's current state and what you'd like to address. We then work across the treatment area methodically — the Dr Pen device is moved in precise, overlapping passes to ensure even coverage.

The skin will appear pink to red immediately after treatment — similar to mild sunburn. This typically settles within 24 to 48 hours. You may notice slight sensitivity and tightness during this period, which is a sign that the healing process has begun. We will advise on aftercare in detail before you leave — what to use, what to avoid, and how to protect the skin in the days following treatment.

Sun protection is essential after microneedling. The treated skin is more susceptible to UV damage during the healing period, and on the KZN South Coast, sun exposure is a year-round reality. SPF every morning without fail — we'll remind you at every session.

When to Expect Results

The initial flush of improved skin tone is visible within a day or two of treatment settling. The deeper collagen response takes longer — most clients see the most meaningful improvement between four and six weeks after their first session, as the new collagen matures.

A course of three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, produces significantly better results than a single treatment. Each session builds on the last. After a course, many clients maintain results with a single session every three to four months.

Who Microneedling Is Right For

Microneedling suits a wide range of skin types and tones and is generally safe for most adults. It is particularly relevant for:

There are some conditions where microneedling is not appropriate — active acne or rosacea, certain blood conditions, or recent skin treatments. Our consultation process covers all of this before we begin. If you're unsure, ask. We'd rather discuss it properly than proceed with something that isn't right for you.
