What Are Lash Extensions?
Lash extensions are individual synthetic fibres — each one applied by hand to a single natural lash using a semi-permanent adhesive. The result is longer, fuller, darker lashes that frame the eye without makeup. Unlike strip lashes, which sit on the lash line, extensions attach to individual hairs and move naturally with them.
A full set typically takes between 90 minutes and two hours for a first appointment. Infills — topping up as your natural lashes shed — take 45 to 75 minutes and are recommended every three to four weeks to maintain a full look.
The Three Main Styles: Classic, Hybrid, and Volume
Classic
One extension is applied to each natural lash. Classic extensions give you a defined, mascara-like result — darker and longer than your natural lashes without looking overdone. This is the most natural-looking style and a good starting point if you've never had extensions before.
Hybrid
A mix of classic and volume techniques. Some lashes receive a single extension; others are given a small fan of two or three. The result sits between natural and full — more texture and density than classic, without the drama of a volume set. Most popular for good reason: it suits the widest range of eye shapes and lifestyles.
Volume
Multiple ultra-fine extensions are applied to each natural lash in a small hand-made fan. Volume lashes appear fuller, darker, and more dramatic than classic or hybrid. Because the individual extensions are very light, a full volume set is actually gentler on natural lashes than it looks — the weight is distributed across more attachment points.
"Good lash extensions should look like your own lashes on their best day — not like something added on top of them."
How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?
Lash extensions shed naturally with your own lash cycle — most people lose one to five natural lashes per day as part of the normal growth and shedding process. A full set typically looks complete for three to four weeks before noticeable gaps appear. Regular infill appointments every three to four weeks keep the look consistently full.
How long your extensions last also depends on aftercare. Oil-based products, steam, and rubbing the eye area all accelerate shedding. More on that below.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your appointment at Umdlalo Wellness Spa begins with a brief consultation — your therapist will ask about the look you're after, check your natural lashes, and recommend the style and length best suited to your eye shape and lifestyle. If it's your first time, this is also a chance to ask any questions about the process.
You'll lie comfortably with your eyes closed for the duration of the treatment. Eye pads protect your lower lashes. The application is painless — most clients find it relaxing enough to drift off. When you open your eyes at the end, the result is immediate.
Lash Extension Aftercare
Looking after your extensions is straightforward, but a few habits make a significant difference to how long they last:
- Avoid getting them wet for the first 24 hours — the adhesive needs time to cure fully
- Avoid oil-based cleansers and eye products — oil breaks down the adhesive bond faster than anything else
- Don't rub or pull at your lashes — even gently, this disrupts the attachment and can pull out your natural lashes too
- Sleep on your back or use a silk pillowcase — friction against a cotton pillow causes shedding overnight
- Brush them gently each morning with the clean spoolie your therapist provides — this keeps them sitting evenly and prevents tangling
- Avoid steam for the first 48 hours — that means no sauna, steam room, or very hot showers immediately after your appointment
Are Lash Extensions Safe for My Natural Lashes?
When applied correctly — using the right weight extension for each natural lash, and with proper technique — lash extensions should not damage your natural lashes. The risk comes from extensions that are too heavy, too long, or applied in a way that affects multiple natural lashes simultaneously. This is why the skill and experience of your technician matters.
If you notice your natural lashes thinning over time, that's a sign to reassess the weight of the extensions being applied, or to take a break and let your natural lashes recover. We'll advise you honestly if we think a rest would benefit you.
