First: There's Nothing to Overthink
A good spa experience is designed to be uncomplicated. You arrive, someone looks after you, and you leave feeling better than when you walked in. That's the whole idea. Everything else — the booking, the preparation, what to wear, what to say — is much simpler than people imagine.
At Umdlalo Wellness Spa, we see first-time visitors regularly. The KZN South Coast isn't just a holiday destination — for many people, a trip to the spa here is genuinely their first time. Our team knows how to make that easy.
How to Book
You can book via Fresha (our online booking platform) or call us directly. Either way, tell us a bit about what you're looking for — if you want to unwind completely, a massage is the natural starting point. If your skin needs some attention, book a facial. If you're not sure, just say so. We'll ask a few questions and point you in the right direction.
For weekends and public holidays, book at least a week ahead. We fill up, especially during the school holidays when the South Coast is busiest. Midweek is more relaxed and you'll often find it quieter — which makes for a better experience if you want the gardens and the calm to yourself.
What to Wear and Bring
Comfortable clothing you can easily change out of is all you need. We provide towels, robes (where applicable), and everything required for the treatment. Leave jewellery at home — it gets in the way and you'll just have to remove it when you arrive.
You don't need to bring anything special. If you have prescription skin products or known allergies, let us know at the time of booking and again when you arrive for your consultation. Everything else is handled on our side.
"A spa shouldn't ask you to prepare. You're the one who's supposed to arrive and stop."
What Happens When You Arrive
A brief consultation
Before any treatment, your therapist will take a few minutes to understand what you need. This isn't a lengthy process — it's a quick conversation about how you've been feeling, any areas of discomfort or tension, your skin type if you're having a facial, and whether there are any health conditions we should know about. This makes sure your treatment is right for you, not a generic version of it.
The treatment itself
You'll be guided to the treatment room and given a moment to settle. For massage treatments, you'll undress to your comfort level and lie on the treatment table — you're always covered with a towel or sheet, and only the area being worked on is uncovered. Your therapist will check in on pressure and comfort throughout. If anything doesn't feel right — too firm, too light, too warm — say so. That's not rude. That's useful.
For facials, you remain dressed from the chest down. Your therapist will cleanse, analyse your skin, and work through the treatment steps. Some products may smell unfamiliar. Some steps feel more active than others. It's all intentional.
Afterwards
Don't rush to get up. Take a moment. Drink some water — your body will appreciate it after a massage especially. If you're having more than one treatment, your therapist will guide you to your next room or let you rest between sessions.
After your visit, the lodge gardens at Umdlalo Lodge are yours to enjoy. Grab lunch or a drink at Zizi's Restaurant next door, or simply sit somewhere quiet and let the afternoon wind down. The unhurried hour after a treatment is often the best part.
Common Questions — Answered
Do I have to talk during the treatment?
No. Your therapist will ask what they need to know beforehand. After that, silence is absolutely fine — and honestly, preferred by most people. If you want to chat, that's fine too. There's no rule either way.
What if I fall asleep?
It happens. Frequently. It means the treatment is working. Your therapist won't be offended — they'll take it as a compliment.
What if I don't like something during the treatment?
Say so. Immediately. Whether the pressure is too firm, a product feels uncomfortable, or the room temperature isn't right — telling your therapist is always the right move. The treatment is for you. There's nothing awkward about asking for an adjustment.
Can I book just one treatment, or do I have to do a full day?
One treatment is completely fine. A 60-minute massage is a full, complete experience on its own. There's no obligation to book multiple treatments or a "package" — though if you'd like to combine a massage and a facial, we'll put together a flow that works for you.
Is it walk-ins only, or must I book?
We welcome walk-ins when therapist availability allows — just call ahead to check. To guarantee your preferred time and treatment, booking in advance is always the better option.
